Defive

Overview

Decentralized exchanges offer users control, ownership, and transparency. They also tend to be intimidating. For newcomers, concepts like slippage, liquidity pools, farming, routing, and gas fees often create more confusion than confidence.

The goal of Defive was simple:

How can we make decentralized trading feel as approachable as modern fintech products without removing the power advanced users expect?

The Challenge

Defive was designed for a specific blockchain ecosystem under NDA constraints. Beyond the product itself, the project presented two major challenges. The first was domain knowledge. Before joining the project, I had limited experience with decentralized finance products. Understanding how users interacted with concepts such as liquidity pools, staking, farming, and limit orders became part of the design process itself. The second challenge was complexity. DEX platforms are inherently powerful products, but that power often comes at the cost of usability and trust. My goal was to reduce cognitive load without oversimplifying the product.

Research

I started by analyzing several leading decentralized exchanges and mapping their common features, interaction patterns, and user flows. This research helped identify where users were expected to understand blockchain concepts and where products could provide guidance instead. Working closely with the internal team, I translated these findings into early user flows and wireframes.

Design Principles

Three principles guided most product decisions:

• Build trust first: For many users, trust is the biggest barrier to entering decentralized finance. The product needed to feel reliable, transparent, and predictable from the first interaction.
• Reduce complexity: Whenever possible, technical concepts were simplified, explained, or automated.
• Preserve power for advanced users: Simplification should never come at the expense of flexibility for experienced traders.

Lite Mode & Pro Mode

One of the key product decisions was introducing two different levels of complexity.

• Lite Mode: Lite Mode focused on the decisions users actually needed to make. Advanced configuration such as slippage settings, gas customization, and expert controls were handled automatically or hidden from view. The goal was to make trading feel approachable for first-time users.

• Pro Mode: Pro Mode exposed the full set of controls expected by experienced DeFi users, allowing them to customize transactions and optimize execution strategies. This separation allowed the product to support beginners and experts without compromising either experience.

Features

The platform was designed to support a wide range of DeFi activities, including:

• Trading
• Liquidity Pools
• Farming
• Staking
• Limit Orders
• Gamification mechanics

Brand Identity

The product name was predefined, but the visual identity was designed from scratch. The logo combined the letter D with the shape of a human hand. The intention was to introduce a more human and approachable personality into a category often dominated by technical and abstract visual languages.

The hand symbol was chosen to communicate:

• Trust
• Collaboration
• Simplicity
• Accessibility

The mark was also intentionally designed to remain recognizable at very small sizes, including token and favicon use cases.

Design System

The project included a complete design system covering both desktop and mobile experiences.

I designed:

• Core UI components
• Interaction patterns
• Responsive behaviors
• Visual tokens
• Layout foundations

The system supported both the product itself and multiple marketing surfaces.

Landing Pages

Alongside the product experience, I designed landing pages for both pre-launch and post-launch phases of the project. The goal was to communicate trust and clarity before users ever connected a wallet or executed their first trade.

Looking Back

Defive became an exercise in learning a new domain under time constraints and translating technical complexity into approachable experiences. Looking back, the project reinforced an idea that still shapes how I think about product design:

Good design doesn't remove complexity. It decides who needs to see it and when.
